For three equipment i.e. exchanger, horizontal vessel and vertical vessel, the program can calculate wind loads. On the equipment geometry page, select "Consider Program Calculated Wind Loads". For exchanger and horizontal vessel, the “Basic wind pressure” field displays the calculated value. For vertical vessel, wind shear and wind moment are calculated and displayed in the appropriate fields.
The wind or height factor on the dialog box refers to any additional factor you would like to apply to the calculated values of wind loads.
Foundation3D supports wind loads calculated using ASCE 2016, 2010 and 2005
The wind loads on equipment calculated by Foundation3D uses the recommendations by the ASCE task committee on wind induced forces published in “Wind Loads and Anchor Bolt Design for Petrochemical Facilities”. The highlights of the assumptions made in calculating the wind forces on pressure vessels and towers are specified below:
F = qZGCfAe
F = Applied wind force
Z = velocity pressure determined in accordance with ASCE 7
G = gust factor determined in accordance with ASCE 7
Cf = Force coefficient as specified in the guidelines
Ae = projected area as specified in the guidelines
In calculating the projected area,
Projected diameter of the vessel = Vessel Diameter (including insulation)+ 1.5 ft
In calculating the projected area,
Projected diameter of the vessel = Vessel Diameter (including insulation)+ 5 ft
Projected height of the vessel = Vessel height +1*Vessel Diameter
Foundation3D uses the simplified method for calculating wind loads on a rigid vertical vessel.
The specified value of Cf is used to calculate the transverse loads on an exchanger. A value of Cf = 1.0 is used to calculate the longitudinal wind force on the exchanger and the horizontal vessel. The same value of Cf is used for all directions in case of computing wind loads on vertical vessel.
